I. Population
The population in Jining City keeps growing at a low rate. By the end of 2004, it has a population of 8.0229 million, with a birth rate of 1.127%, a mortality rate of 0.531%, and a natural growth rate of 0.596%. In 2004 among the population, 4.109 million are male and 3.9139 million female, 5.6306 million rural residents and 2.3923 urban ones.
II. Education level:
The overall education level of Jining’s population has been steadily improving. According to the 5th national census held in 2000, 201,200 residents had a college-equivalent education, 734,800 with senior high school education, 2.844 million with junior middle school education, 2.554 million with primary school education. Compared with the data from the 4th national census, the illiteracy rate fell from 19.7% to 10.9%, a decrease of 8.8 percentage.
III. Jining’s ethnic constitutes
In Jining, the Han people make the largest ethnic group, making up 99.2% of the city’s permanent residents. The population of the other 48 ethnic minority groups add up to 0.8%. The difference in the size of these minority nationalities is great. Hui ethnic minority group has a population of 45,300 people, accounting for 84.3 percent of all the ethnic minorities. The ethnic minority with over a thousand people are Manchu and Mongolian. Those whose population is over a hundred include: Tibetan, Uygur, Korean, Miao, Yi, Zhuang, Buyi, Dong, Tujia, Va, Lahu, and so on.
IV .Employment
The employment situations have been improved steadily and the salaries increased substantially. By the end of 2004, 557,500 people have worked in the government departments and agencies, a decrease of 1.4 percent compared with the previous year; and 1.2322 million were employed by the private businesses, increased by 20.2 percent. The total amount of the salaries of the employees is 7.563 billion yuan, increased by 13.4%; and the average annual salary of the employees is 13,608 yuan, an increase of 13.5% compared with the previous year. The registered unemployment rate in the city’s urban areas stood at 3.4%.
