The living standards of both urban and rural residents have been improving continuously. According to the sample surveys, in 2004, the average per capita annual income among local urban residents reached 10254.27 yuan, 14.8% more than that of the previous year in terms of comparable prices. The average per capita annual disposable income reached 9502.21 yuan, 1192.37 more than the 2003 figure, increased by 14.3% compared with that of the previous year. The average per capita annual expenditure reached 6024.49 yuan, increased by 8.6%. The average per capita annual net income among the rural residents reached 3648.2 yuan, 470.1 yuan more than the 2003 figure, increased by 14.8% compared with that of the previous year. The average per capita expenditure reached 2232.9 yuan, increased by 19.0%.
Housing conditions have been further improved. By the end of 2004, in the urban districts, the average per capita living space has reached 20.1 square meters, 0.2 square meters more than that of 2003. In rural areas, the average per capita living space reached 29.5 square meters, 0.5 square meters more than that of 2003.
