I. Education
In 2004, Jining had 5 universities, with a total number of 45,600 students; 10 polytechnic schools, with 20,900 students altogether; 72 regular senior high schools, with 168,800 students totally; 54 secondary vocational schools and skilled workers’ schools, with 65,200 students altogether; 354 junior middle schools, with a total number of 435,500 students; 1573 primary schools, with 566,500 students. The attendance rate of school-age children for the nine-year compulsory education exceeded 99.9% and the enrollment rates of junior middle school and senior high school were 100% and 68% respectively. The preschool education and special education have also made big progress.

II.Public health
By the end of 2004, the city has 1,351 medical and public health organizations, including 101 hospitals, 139 health institutes and 14 disease prevention and control centers. The city has 25,329 medical workers, including 21,390 licensed practitioners. There are altogether 15,433 beds in hospitals. In the city every thousand people are entitled to 3.15 health care professionals. In rural areas, 4,720 clinics have been standardized. A public health network involving health education, disease prevention and medical care has been formed.

III. Telecommunications
By the end of 2004, in the urban areas, the total telephone switching system capacity has expanded to 1.7277 million lines, increased by 5.5% compared with that of the previous year. In the rural areas, the total telephone switching system capacity reached 1.0944 million lines, increased by 7.8%. The mobile phone switching system capacity reached 1.2351 million lines, nearly the same as the previous year. In 2004, the city’s post and telecommunications sector reported sales of 1.896 billion yuan, increased by 11.1%, among which the telecommunications reported sales of 1.662 billion yuan, increased by 11.4% and the post sector reported sales of 234 million yuan, increased by 9.6%. In the urban areas, there are 1.6219 million household telephone users, 241,900 more than 2003; in rural areas, there are 903,300 household telephone users, 127,300 more than 2003; there are totally 1.1503 million mobile phone users, an increase of 32.5%. At present, people can call direct to more than 200 countries and regions all over the world.

IV. Electricity
In 2003, the city had 40 power plants that were in operation, under construction, or to be built. The annual installment capacity was 5 million k.w., accounting for 1/6 of that of Shandong Province, generating power of 20.35 billion kwh. Among them, 4 were province-managed, namely, Zou Xian Power Plant, Jining Power Plant, Yunhe Power Plant and Liyan Power Plant, with a total installment capacity of 4.35 million kw; 30 power plants were for local public use or enterprise-owned, with an installment capacity of 650,000 kw.

V. Transportations:
In 2003, the total length of city roads was 5291.8 kilometers, among which the lengths of expressways and grade-one roads were 182.6 kilometers and 249.3 kilometers respectively. 87% of the roads are of high quality; the road density was 49.46 kilometers/100 square kilometers. The total cargo transportation volume by road was 127 million tons and 4.726 billion ton-kilometers; the passenger transportation volume was 45.38 million person-times and 3.14 billion person-kilometers. The total cargo transportation volume by river was 14.45 million tons and 9.489 billion ton-kilometers.

VI. Culture:
By the end of 2004, the city has 12 art groups, 13 performance sites, 11 public libraries, 1 mass art palace, 12 cultural relics protection institutions. The cultural publication has further developed. 10 kinds of magazines and 8 kinds of newspapers have been published. The radio and TV coverage has been enlarged. There were 134,000 cable TV household users. The population coverage of the radio and TV broadcast were both 100%.

VI. Sports:
The city has witnessed constant improvements in the public sports facilities. The mass sports activities are thriving and National Health Drive are widespread. In 2004, the city had 2000 community gyms including 4 big ones in the central district. In national competitions, the athletes of Jining won 8 gold medals, 12 silvers and 10 bronzes; in provincial competitions, the athletes won 25 gold medals, 45 silvers and 48 bronzes.
